The pays de Bergerac provides a wonderful combination of gentle countryside, picturesque towns and villages, fine wine and gourmet food. The Dordogne, one of the most beautiful rivers of France, winds it’s way through Bergerac and was once of enormous importance to the region’s economy; it can be enjoyed by walks along it’s banks or taking a boat trip in a traditional gabare. The renovated old town has been restored to it’s former beauty and a pleasurable afternoon can be spent simply strolling it’s streets and relaxing in the shady squares.

There are several bastide towns throughout the valley of the Dordogne, the region of France which boasts the most chateaux. Perigueux, the capital of the department, with it’s cathedral and ancient city centre is half an hour away.
